Specialisation Art, science and the intricacies of publishing in the early modern period

Larissa van Vianen is a guest researcher at the Huygens Institute, studying an annotated copy of Rembertus Dodonaeus’ Stirpium Historiae pemptades sex from the librije of Enkhuizen with a stipendium from the Art, Books and Collections foundation. In 2021 Larissa received her Bachelor of Art History at the University of Amsterdam Cum Laude and finished her Master Book History in 2023 Cum Laude at University of Amsterdam with a thesis on the eighteenth-century natural historian Pierre Lyonet and his publishing strategies.

As both an art and book historian, Larissa is fascinated by scientific images and the practical considerations that lead up to the publication of scientific research. She focuses on the complex relation between author and publisher, text and paratext, word and image. In her research, Larissa pays particular attention to the different stages of scientific publications and the materiality of preliminary studies that precede publication. Additionally Larissa is intrigued by the aesthetics of knowledge and the importance of design for the dissemination and appreciation of scientific publications in the early modern period.
