Martijn Eickhoff new director NIOD
Martijn Eickhoff has been appointed by the KNAW as director of NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies as of 1 September 2021. Eickhoff is the successor of Frank van Vree, who is handing over his function due to his approaching retirement, but who will remain at NIOD as the programme director of the research project on Dutch violence during the Indonesian War of Independence.
Martijn Eickhoff (1967) has been a senior researcher at NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies since 2006. Since two years he is also extraordinary professor of archaeology and heritage of war and mass violence at the Groningen Institute of Archaeology (GIA) of the University of Groningen. He studies the history, cultural dimensions and after-effects of (large-scale) violence and power shifts in Europe and Asia in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with a particular emphasis on the spatial, material and transnational aspects thereof.
