Comfort for sorrowful hearts
Troost voor bedroefde harten (Comfort for sorrowful hearts). Letters from Vincent van Gogh will be published by publishing house Prometheus October 2020. This anthology has been compiled by Leo Jansen, Nienke Bakker and Hans Luijten.
Vincent van Gogh’s letters are one of the most impressive artist correspondences known. This new selection, richly illustrated with many sketches and paintings, offers insight into Van Gogh’s thoughts and feelings, his close relationship with his brother Theo and his sometimes difficult relationships with family members, friends and other artists. We read about his dreams, doubts and fears, but above all about his all-consuming passion to create art that “brings comfort to sorrowful hearts.”
Nienke Bakker, Leo Jansen and Hans Luijten are the editors of the six-part letter edition Vincent van Gogh – The Letters (2009). This new book is based on the web edition of Van Gogh’s correspondence: www.vangoghletters.org.
