The philosopher en de philologist
Thijs Porck
This is a digital edition of the correspondence between the philosopher Gerardus Johannes Petrus Josephus (Gerard) Bolland (1854-1922) and the philologist Pieter Jacob Cosijn (1840-1899), consisting of 46 letters covering the period 1879 to 1899. This correspondence provides a unique insight in the history of the study of Old German Studies in the Netherlands, England and Germany. In addition, the letters allow a reconstruction of Bolland’s academic development from a self-taught student with an interest in Old English to professor of Philosophy at Leiden University. Cosijn, professor of Old German and Anglo-Saxon in Leiden, played a central role in this development.
