Biography
Huib Zuidervaart studied Physics, Astronomy and History of Science at VU University Amsterdam. He obtained his Ph.D. at Utrecht University for a thesis on Dutch Astronomy in the Eighteenth Century: Van ‘Konstgenoten’ en Hemelse Fenomenen (1999). He has worked in various positions in secondary and university education and in museums, including the Zeeuws Biologisch Museum, Museum Boerhaave, VU University Amsterdam, Leiden University and the Roosevelt University College (Middelburg). From 2007 until his retirement in 2017, he worked at Huygens ING as a senior researcher and (until 2016) as editor-in-chief of the Dutch Journal for the History of Science and Universities: Studium. From 2016 to 2019 he was employed at Utrecht University as book review editor of ISIS, official Journal of the History of Science Society. Currently, he is a guest collaborator, working together with Douglas Anderson, on the completion of the edition of the Collected Letters of Antoni van Leeuwenhoek. He also publishes on his field of research: the history of Early Modern Science, especially with regard to the role of scientific instruments, scholarly institutions and their collections.
