Connected Editing

The aim of the project is to explore a new digital editing methodology, connected editing, to address major outstanding challenges in the creation of digital editions. By modeling text as a network of information, it becomes possible to model complex source texts in a true-to-life manner. An example of this is the expression of non-linear and overlapping text structures, which are common in literary and historical documents. In addition, connected editing works towards joint editing of the same source text and from multiple research perspectives. A first step in research into the connected editing methodology is to formalize modular, flexible workflows for digital editors. Based on these workflow models, the development of stable, generic edition tools can be promoted and the barrier to making digital editions lowered. Part of the project objectives are the further development and implementation of collation software and markup languages, and the building of several prototype editions of modern Dutch literary texts (1890-1950).
